The powerful prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary

If you arrive at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament early for Mass on a Sunday, you may be able to join parishioners in praying the Rosary.  One of the prayers we include is the Memorare (which is Latin for “Remember”).

Following Mass last Sunday, I was part of a conversation while having a donut and cup of coffee.  Parishioners of various ages were discussing when/how they were introduced to this powerful prayer.

One Mom shared that while driving with her children, their car was forced onto the side of the road, somewhat out of control.  Once she regained her spot the road the children said, “Mom did you know that you said the whole Memorare prayer “out loud” while you were getting us safely back on the road?”  A few deep breaths later she knew that it is a powerful prayer, indeed.

I was curious to learn more and found the following. The Memorare is often described as a "powerful" prayer, meaning that those who pray it have their prayers answered. Sometimes, though, people misunderstand the text, and think of the prayer as essentially miraculous. The words "never was it known that any one... was left unaided" does not mean that the requests that we make while praying the Memorare will be automatically granted or granted in the way we desire them to be. As with any prayer, when we humbly seek the aid of the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Memorare, we will receive that aid, but it may take a very different form from what we desire.”

For this thankful Mom and her children their prayer was granted that day.  This memory comes back to them each time they join in our morning Rosary just prior to Mass.  If you would like a copy of the prayer card you can find one on the E-Team table in the Gathering Space. Please help yourself to any prayer cards and reading materials.
