Reflections from a Synod Ambassador
While talking with another parishioner about the upcoming Synod Small Group meetings recently the question on his mind was "Why group meetings? Why is our leader not telling us what we are to do, but rather asking us? As his flock we should be following our shepherd."
What would have been a good response?
In reading an article in The Catholic Spirit dated August 25, 2021, I found some perspectives I could have shared. Archbishop Hebda wants to hear from everyone and shares that Pope Francis speaks about synods and how important it is that we (the Church on journey together) be prayerful listeners. In the small group meetings we’re listening for the Holy Spirit, especially in what our brothers and sisters are saying. To have that opportunity to listen, a small group is the best means for doing that. It’s respectful of the input that people want to offer. At the same time, it also really gives people that chance not only to listen, but also to speak.
In 2019 we Catholics were asked to reflect on the local Church’s strengths and challenges through 30 Prayer and Listening Events and now will take a deeper dive to speak to the three focus areas that emerged from that feedback. At the end of each small group discussion feedback will be gathered and shared with the Archdiocese. What a gift to be invited to be part of this and I hope to see you there.
Imagine the impact of 186 parishes across the Archdiocese journeying together! Be part of this historic moment now, and part of the future of our local Church. Refer to the “Synod” page on the website for details of the Synod Small Group Meetings.
